[gothic-l] dux/herzog/hertig redux

I have to retract part of what I said about 'hertig/Herzog'.Waterman (p.37) lists 'Herzog' as a "purely Germanic term" for one of the institutions of the early Germanic tribes.  While I still think 'hertig' is a Low German loanword, I'd always conisidered '-zog/tig' a calque on the Latin 'dux'.  I don't see how this could be so if the institution were purely Germanic.   /I think you'll find that 'hertig' was one of the many loanwords borrowed from Low German into Scandinavian during the time of the Hanseatic League, and that it's not common Germanic./

so I understand that the title of Herzog/Hertig, as Dux was used in
Sweden as well. Unless this Swedish nobleman borrowed the title from
Germany, this might suggest that the term, i.e. the concept was
common Germanic and perhaps not borrowed by the Goths from the
Greek. Yet, I think the title Herzog or similar was not used in Anglo-
Saxon England.
