Hello everybody!
Although it is not in my field of interest (I study medicine) I like
to study history and to a lesser degree linguistics. So,in the
various internet fora concerning my hobbies that I write, I have as
nickname Bishop Wulfila or Ulfila. In one of them another user
ironically pointed out that Ulfila is a girl's name, and it
means "beautiful as the dawn" or something like that. Allegedly
Ulfila was the daughter of Odin and Frigga, with him citing as his
source a certain "Scandinavielainen Mythologi" by Juhan Andersson (it
must be a finnish book). This of course triggered a short but very
heated flame-war in which I tried to explain to him who Wulfila
really was.
Is it possible that he was right? Was there a scandinavian
name "Ulfila" meaning "beautiful as the dawn"? I am sorry to intrude
on your scholarly conversation with such a trivial question but I
could not find anyone more suitable to answer it.
With respect,
George Papadimitropoulos.
(I am greek in case you are wondering)
