Tore,
nobody knows wherefrom Rurik came.
I do not know of which generation
of Russian scholars do you speak,
but modern archaeological finds
expose to light two indisputable facts:
1) Novgorod, where Rurik had allegedly
come to, did not exist in 1862, it
arouse in the middle of the 10th century;
2) there is no one visible trace
of Scandinavian presence in Kiev
and its neighborhood at the end of 9th
and begin of 10th century.
I should add also that reality of Rurik
himself (as well as its successor Oleg)
is dubious.
Of course, all this cannot shade
obviousness of borrowing many feudal
Russian titles from Germanic languages
as I have written in a previous message.
Vladimir

It is an interesting view. The Varangians that came with Rurik in 862
from the Svear were using the title Jarl in their homeland.
It is now fully accepted by the present generation of scholars in
Russia that the Varangians played an important role in forming the
Russian state. Novgorod, Kiev etc.
