Hailai allai,
The Dictionary of Phrase & Fable, an eclectic mass of legendary,
historical & proverbial lore, by E Cobham Brewer (1895), contains the
following curious entry:
"FLINS: An idol of the ancient Vandals settled in Lusace. It was a
huge stone, draped, wearing a lion's skin over its shoulders, and
designed to represent death."

...something I've always wondered about. Does anyone know what
Brewer's source for this was? Or if it has any historical basis?
