Hello,
Having finished the Gothic course by Mr. Salo I have written a poem in
Gothic (or should one rather use the term Neo-Gothic here?).. That is,
at least I tried hard.. Even if you know a Germanic language as a
mothertongue all those conjucations are still pure brain pain.. So I'd
like to present it for correction, since I'm a complete amateur in the
matters of Gothic, having stumbled upon it while studying J.R.R.
Tolkien's works and Elvish in especial for quite a while.
Right.. So there are 18 lines and 4 stanzas. I shall post just one
stanza at a time until it will be fully discussed. Literal translation
below.
Hwas ist þata hráinama* ana aírþai?
What is the purest on earth?
Snáiws saei ni [laggs]** libiþ,
Snow which not long lives,
Saei sa himins uns ofta fragibiþ
Which the heaven us often grants
Swê huzd miþ kaldamma*** haírtin?
Like [a] treasure by [a] cold heart?
Questions:
* Unfortunately, Mr. Salo's course does not deal with comparative and
superlative.. So I'm not sure at all about this form..
** Mr. Salo's course doesn't deal with adverbs either.. And the other
sources just give a chart with very irregular ones.. So, how do you
form an adverb out of _laggs_?
*** Since _kalds_ has no article here, it's strong declension, I
suppose? Or do prepositions trigger weak declension like articles?
