As far as I know, Bulgar is derived from Bul?ar "(of) mixed (descent)" < 
bul?amaq "mix". Compare Chagatay "???????" (bul?amaq) "make cloudy, dull, 
make turbid", or Turkish "bulamak" (???????) "mix, stir; besmear, bedaub".
