If this is a genuinely old spelling, I guess it might be something to
do with the accent in Latin or Romance; that is, the second diphthong
might have been preserved because it was in a stressed syllable. But
it would be interesting to know how early this spelling is recorded,
and why English sources use the variant Gesalic.
