Yes in the army they had to understand some gothic and most probably were Gothic speakers by necessity but after the conversion at least the laws were written in latin and they had to know latin to correspond with the indigenous population. Still the language was not the ethnicity marker after having accepted many new groups but only a means of communication. The religion was, claiming heritage from Gaut, and later a politically preserved Arianism.
