Jiddish related to Gothic?

Hi David,
thanks for your insights. I agree of course and the point relevant to this discussion list is that Yiddish is not derived from Gothic but from south middle high German.
As for the Khazars they never spoke Yiddish and they were not of Gothic decent. Instead, the Khazars were of uiguric-turkish ethnic and linguistic origins, which can be seen from their personal names and the fact that prior to their conversion to Judaism, they venerated deities such as Tengri, Umay and Erlik. Finally, by far not all Khazars converted to Judaism. Large parts of the population were muslims, indeed some scholars bellieve that Judaism was confinded only to the ruling elites.
