Class Mobility in Europe at the 3rd Symposium on
Bilingualism, University of the West of England, Bristol,
18 - 20 April 2001

The linguistic construction of Europe: migrant elites and the cultural
funcy"ions of English. The focus of this colloquium is on the
linguistic identity" of Europe and its emerging multilingual
elite. The main questions are:

· is there a new "itinerant" culture of highly skilled migrants
in Europe?

· what role does multilingualism play in the construction of the ethnic
identity of this new mobile middle class?

· to what extent is this new middle class an agent of a new European
identity?

· what is the role of English in the process of constructing Europe's
linguistic identity?

We are looking for papers on these questions from scholars from a wide
rangþ of disciplines like Linguistics/ Sociolinguistics,
Anthropology, Cultural Geography and History. A final panel discussion will
be held after the paper session(s) to discuss the questions raised above.
