THE third INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on mother tongue education
teaching and learning Language and literature

July 11th-13th, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands

At this conference, sponsored by the International Association for the
Improvement of Mother Tongue Education, research on theory and practice
is
presented and discussed, focussing on the teaching of language and
literature. The conference theme for 2001 is Changing Worlds,
For the 2001 conference, we especially invited contributions on
curricular
movements in different countries. a. Changing the subject, about
redefinition the content and methodology of L1-learning and teaching
b.      'Have a look', showing real classrooms from different countries
on
video, discussing cultural specific routines and particularities.

We invited specialist from different countries to present curricular
movements in their countries, especially in at the end of primary school
and the beginning of secondary school (11-15 years old). These sessions
are
supposed to shed light on differences and similarities of different
educational contexts.

Other presentations and workshops follow the regular themes: Reading,
Writing, Speaking & Listening, Literature, Fiction, Film and other
media,
Language Awareness and Language Teaching, Educational policy:
relationship
between first, second and mainstream languages in learning and teaching,
Quality of text books in mother tongue teaching.

Workshops and discussion


On Wednesday July 11th, workshops will be two and a half hours in
length.
On Thursday, July 12th, and Friday, July 13th, other presentation
formats
will be organised, in time slots of 90 minutes. In order to give the
participants access to as many presentations as possible, presenters
from
all formats are requested to present a poster, and give a short oral
introduction. Each theme in the conference will be discussed with all
presenters in this theme. This discussion will be led by two discussants
who attended all presentations within the theme.
Social and child programme


Pre-conference (Tuesday July 10th) and Post-conference (Saturday July
14th)
excursions will be organised. The programme and excursion registration
forms will be sent in April 2001. During the conference, one of the
lunches
will be served in a typical and nice Amsterdam environment.
Co-travellers
can accompany the conference delegates on this lunch tour.
During the conference, at the last time slot each day, a Dutch Language
and
culture course is offered to participants. This course is free for
co-travellers, who pick up their conference delegates that day.
For those who bring children with them, a special children programme can
be
arranged. University students will take care of your children, visiting
interesting sites in the region of Amsterdam. If you wish having us to
arrange contacts with students for your children, please write a message
to
Martine at ilo.uva.nl, and give us information about age and preferences of
the children. We will try to match your wishes with the experience and
preferences of our university students. With this student, you can
negotiate about your children's programme.
Limited Enrolment


In order to induce as much interaction as possible in the programme,
enrolment is limited to 150 participants. We will strive for a variety
of
nations/regions/language communities.
Language


The working language of the Conference will be (International) English.
If
necessary, as in former conferences, some of the delegates might serve
as
interpreters to assist French or Spanish speaking presenters.
Conference Fee


The conference fee will be 200 US $ (Ph.D students 150 US $), including
the
programme and abstract book, lunches, coffee and tea, and reception.
Accommodation and other meals are not included.
