CALL FOR PAPERS
RIO BRAVO:
A JOURNAL OF BORDERLANDS
Rio Bravo: A Journal of Borderlands invites contributions for a special
issue
on "Spanish Language Journalism and Cultural Identity in South Texas."
Borderland scholars have long recognized the important role of the Spanish
language newspaper in the cultural history of the Chicano community in the
Southwest. The newspaper was particularly important because it served as a
vehicle for strengthening cultural identity and heightening cultural
awareness among the subordinated ethnic minority group. The special issue of
the journal will explore how and why the newspaper came to be such a
powerful
force in the preservation and perpetuation of the minority culture. The
issue will focus on linguistic, social, political, historical, economic,
anthropological, and literary aspects of the Spanish language newspaper in
the South Texas region. Contributions are welcome from all disciplines and
may be written in either English or Spanish. The deadline for submission is
OCTOBER 15, 2001.
Rio Bravo is one of the nation's leading journals in Borderlands Studies.
It is a refereed journal published bi-nationally at The University of
Texas -
