At long last, we are happy to announce that the "proceedings" from the
First National Conference on Heritage Languages in America, in Long
Beach, California, October, 1999, have been published, in time for our
next conference on October, 2002. Two years in the making seems like a
long time. As we began working on the proceedings, though, we found that
there was a great deal to be said about many important areas --
definitions of heritage languages and heritage language speakers,
profiles of heritage language speakers, history of heritage languages in
this country, educational issues, research issues, and issues for action
in the future.
Many of you have contributed to this book and participated in the
conference. You are all mentioned in the book!! Thank you for your
contributions. We hope you enjoy the book, and we look forward to seeing
you at the next conference!!
