SPANISH APPLIED LINGUISTICS

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, University of
Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish
Applied Linguistics at Assistant Professor level effective July 1,
2002.  Entry level salary for Assistant Professors is $45,374. The
successful candidate will have a PhD, native or near-native
proficiency in Spanish, demonstrated research competence, and strong
teaching potential.  Candidates should be very well qualified in
Spanish Applied Linguistics, preferably in second language
acquisition, sociolinguistics, or discourse analysis. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate
level in the area of specialization, to teach core language courses in
Spanish, and to take on responsibilities in the coordination and
management of the language program.

Applicants should have a strong cultural orientation to their teaching
and research, have relevant interdisciplinary interests and be open to
collaboration with other departments in the Faculty and other
disciplines in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural
Studies.  The Department is especially interested in hearing from
applicants who are able to offer a secondary interest in one or more
of the following areas: computer assisted language learning,
translation, Spanish for native speakers, Business Spanish, historical
linguistics, or cultural studies. The area of Applied Linguistics has
become an important focal point in the Department with a total of
seven positions in French, German, Spanish, Russian, and
Ukrainian. The successful candidate will work with this newly
constituted group of applied linguists to develop courses and programs
in this area. Fluency in another Romance Language (especially
Portuguese), or in a Germanic or Slavic language would be an asset.
