Inquiry: Literature on proficiency assessment and classroom observation research on heritage learners

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Southern California.  My current research interest is Japanese as a heritage language.  Would you advise me about the sources of the references (Internet, journal, proceeding, etc.) I can get some references regarding the following areas? 

1.  The literature on assessment of language proficiency of heritage learners
2. The literature on classroom observation research and discuss the design, method of data collection, and types of analysis.
