The University of Iowa, in collaboration with Binghamton
University and the American Council on Education, will host
a conference on Cultures and Languages Across the
Curriculum, November 5 - 6, 2005, at the University of Iowa
in Iowa City. The conference will examine opportunities to
expand the role of culture in LAC initiatives and will
consider alternative models that foster the acquisition of
cross-cultural competencies. This conference will also
consider other LAC issues that have not yet been adequately
discussed or analyzed, including: 1) How does LAC relate to
comparative literature, cultural studies, and area studies?
2) How does LAC fit into the international education
missions of U.S. government and industry (the “expert” model
vs. the “metropolitan migrant” model)? 3) How does LAC
relate to content-based language instruction and the
development of new content-based FL textbooks and
technology? 4) How can we better link LAC to K-12 foreign
language and cross-cultural education as well as to post-
secondary international education, including study abroad?
Details about the conference, including an online
registration form, available at: http://intl-
programs.uiowa.edu/projects/CLAC_info.htm#DEADLINE
