I don't mean to quibble or split hairs but I wanted to note what I thought
to be a small mistake in your above example -- number 2 should more
probably be:

2. The interest in each other_j that [John and Mary]_j showed was
   fleeting.

Since 'each other' would be a quantifier for the compound of 'John and
Mary' and not just 'Mary'.  If anyone disagrees I'd be glad to hear
details.

BTW, I'm just an amateur linguist, not a professional.
