I feel very sheepish to have misrepresented Chris
Kennedy. I wish I could retract "die-hard generative
grammar guy" -- it was a misuse of "generative
grammar," and a depiction of him that fails to capture
his characteristic open-mindedness, for an
understatement.
Instead of making an insult when he said "we
presuppose all this stuff" (as I first thought), Chris
was making a point: there must be some way to
represent features in order for operations on features
to work.
(To illustrate, as an experiment in class, once, he
drew an AVM with a feature: BAR-LEVEL, whose values
could be things like "head," "intermediate," or
"maximal." This caused (well, aided) the realization
in me that such a representation might exist, which
makes a guy wonder how to compare the frameworks.)
Apologies again for my terrible wording and my
inadvertent insults, but thanks for all your responses
so far. I'm learning a lot.
Liz
