Hi,

In addition to Emily's work, there is a paper by Bob Borsley that
discusses an empty copula. (Bob was probably too modest to mention it

I wrote a paper about surface-based syntax that discusses German
copulaless sentences among other phenomena that are problematic for an
entierly surface-based syntax that does not allow for empty elements and
tries to infer properties of constituents from the linear order/position
of their daughters. You will find the paper at:
