Hi All,
This isn't exactly an HPSG question, but my experience is that y'all are
better keeping track of citations than us MP types. Does anyone know who
first proposed that S' was really headed by C and was a CP? I'm away from
all my books for the holidays and I haven't been able to find it on the
web.
Many thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
The proposal shows up on p. 3 of Chomsky's "Barriers", with no citation of
prior literature. However, I recall in discussions with Wayne Harbert
at Cornell circa 1983 that the idea had already been floated then.
The IP / CP system is NOT used in "Knowledge of Language" (KoL) which
is also 1986, but written (I believe) slightly earlier. However,
Chomsky does use, in KoL, "C" as the label for the phrase headed
by "COMP" rather than "S-bar" (p.189). In a note (p. 217), he cites
Aoun and Lightfoot as taking "INFL to be the head of the full clause C".
That's all I have right at my fingertips here.
Best,
Stan
