Is Generative AI the Future of Qualitative Discourse Analysis?
Susan C. Herring
Indiana University Bloomington, USA
Generative AI is rapidly transforming how scholars teach and do research. In this presentation, I will report on experiments my research team has been conducting to explore whether, and if so, how well, generative AI is able to apply qualitative computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) methods that are regularly assigned to students in a course I teach, given similar guidelines and data. The focus is on two phenomena: CMC (speech) acts and politeness. I will show where and how the AI fails in its analyses, as well as where it succeeds, including at what cost to the methods themselves. I aim to generate debate about the future of qualitative discourse analysis in the era of generative AI.
