The seminar will feature contributions from Jillian R. Cavanaugh (Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, CUNY), Cornelia Gerhardt (Saarland University), Petros Karatsareas (University of Westminster), and Kathleen C. Riley (Rutgers University, New Jersey), in conversation with Siria Guzzo (University of Salerno). This seminar will explore the intersection of food and food-related practices, language, and social identity among migrant communities. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from diverse global contexts, the panel will examine food not only as a source of nourishment but also as a sociolinguistic resource through which cultural heritage, social bonds, and resistance to assimilation are expressed. The I-LanD Seminar Series is designed to foster critical dialogue and scholarly exchange. Each speaker will briefly present their contribution to the theme, followed by questions and discussion with fellow convenors and participants. This special issue explores how science fiction films and television series stage non-normative embodiments - both terrestrial and astral - to challenge conventional narratives about gender, sexuality, ability, and monstrosity.
