Purpose:
Fourth in the series, Open Road 2008 will be a major two day conference
presented by Vicnet, a division of the State Library of Victoria.
A unique, biennial conference held in Melbourne, Open Road brings
together Australian and international participants, providing an
excellent opportunity to discuss and showcase innovative Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) developments in the area of multilingualism.
Open Road 2008: Multilingualism and the Information Society will
explore, discuss and showcase the latest use of ICT in linguistic and
cultural development, in delivering information to culturally and
linguistically diverse communities and in developing and promoting
multilingual and multicultural societies.
Open Road 2008 will provide innovative presentations, case studies and
workshops in the eve of the World Information Society Day celebrated
worldwide on 17 May.
Themes:
We invite the submission of papers or expression of interest in
presenting case studies on all aspects of multilingualism on the online
world, including, but not limited to:
ICT for Linguistic & Cultural Development
* Internet as a means of promoting, protecting and preserving diversity
of languages and cultures locally and globally;
* Multilingualism and the internet on the international agenda;
* Change in technology and its affects on new and emerging culturally
and linguistically diverse communities;
* Internet – a medium for cultural & linguistic survival;
* Use of internet for storytelling and oral history;
* Use of online radio in community languages; and
* Use of innovative ICT in partnerships and collaborations for social
inclusion.
Ethnic Community Web Publishing
* Promotion of multilingualism on the internet;
* Social networking within multilingual communities: possibility or
actuality?
* Content creation and online publishing by migrant and refugee communities.
Innovative Delivery of Information to culturally and linguistically
diverse Communities
* Use of the internet for information dissemination in community
languages, including health, legal and settlement information;
* Use of the internet to create and disseminate content for communities
with strong oral traditions;
* Web internationalisation trends, including (X)HTML and XML
internationalisation;
* Web-based tools and developments for translators in an online environment.
Submission Format for Abstracts:
Abstracts should be submitted via email as either MS Word or OpenOffice
documents to conference at openroad.net.au before the close of business on
19 October 2007 (17.00 EAST).
Presentations should be either 1 hour or 30 minutes in length.
Please provide a cover sheet with the following information:
* Name and contact email address and telephone number of the presenter
* Names of additional authors
* Name of organisation/institution or each author
* Title of presentation
* Indication of preferred length of presentation.
* Abstract
Please include a brief biography of authors (no more than 200 words each).
Important Dates:
Abstract submission: 19 October 2007
Notification of acceptance: 16 November 2007
Submission of paper: 15 February 2008
Conference: 15-16 May 2008
