Crimean Gothic vanished by the 1800s. Kakadu disappeared in 2002. The last
fluent words of Pentlatch were spoken in 1940. And just this year, the
language of Aka-Bo became extinct.
The Lakota people living on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are not alone in
their quest to preserve their indigenous language.
Languages have been disappearing for centuries, some of the earliest dating
back to the 15th century.
And the reasons vary, experts say.
Technology, changing demographics and a low number of new speakers
contribute to the disappearances.
