Linguist urges preservation of Taiwan’s Austronesian languages

The Formosan languages are the most important cultural heritage of
Taiwan and in dire need of preservation, according to Paul Jen-kuei
Li, a Taiwanese linguist who has spent four decades studying
Austronesian, the vast family of languages to which the Formosan
languages belong.
“Most people don’t understand the importance of aboriginal languages
in Taiwan, not even the aborigines themselves,” Li said in a Jan. 25
interview with Taiwan Today.
