MALDEN — A proposal that would have established the state’s first
charter school to immerse students in a Native American language will not
move forward.
However, a charter school previously proposed for Fall River that's now
being proposed for Brockton is among the list of five groups that have been
invited to submit final applications, according to a media release Tuesday
from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The proposed kindergarten-to-Grade 5 Weetumuw Wôpanâak Charter School
that would have opened in Falmouth in August 2015 was not on that list. If
it had been approved, enrollment would have been open to students in Cape
Cod, and Plymouth and Bristol counties, with Somerset, Swansea, Westport
and Taunton listed among the potential sending communities.
