Duration of Call: 1 September - 31 October 2014
The College of Graduate Studies of the University of South Africa (Unisa) is inviting outstanding candidates for Postdoctoral Researcher positions in the fields of natural language processing , computational linguistics, and semantic computing to collaborate in a project on Sustainable Multilingualism in the South African Context.
The candidate should have a doctoral degree in computer science or a related discipline, with specialisation in any one of the following or closely related fields: natural language processing (NLP) , computational linguistics, corpus linguistics, machine learning, or semantic computing. Specific specialisation in any one of the following broad topics will be advantageous:
* Experience in the use of functional programming in NLP applications and computational grammar development, specifically in GF (Grammatical Framework);
* The successful development and application of language resources and computational techniques for under-resourced languages;
* Experience in using Linked Data and natural language technologies towards building the multilingual Semantic Web.
* Knowledge of an African language.
The successful candidates will be expected to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment where the focus is on research, development and deployment of computational approaches towards sustainable multilingualism in the South African context. The candidates will form part of a small team of researchers involved in innovative work towards realising multilingual support for ten of the eleven official languages of South Africa. The expectation is that the candidate's work would increase the international reputation of the research group and the institution through world-class research, publications and applications through collaborations with team members and other researchers, as appropriate, and that it would also contribute towards the increased success of master's and doctoral research at Unisa.
Unisa (www.unisa.ac.za) is an Open Distance Learning (ODL) institution with more than 12,000 master's and doctoral students.
