Please read what I wrote. I said one fights the other. I didn't say either
wins. BOTH keep on happening.
The need to standardize is just as natural as the urge to change and
splinter. When mothers "correct" their childrens grammar and pronounciation,
this is part of standardizing. It makes the child's language understandble
to others. And it fights the child's natural tendency to play or be loose
with the language it is learning. Both go on at the same time.
