If any of you feel insecure in your understanding of
paleoclimatology (I know I do), this web site is helpful:
http://www.esd.ornl.gov/projects/qen/nerc.html
This will take you to a page that lets you click on Europe, or any
other continent. This is as good an introductory overview as I've
found. There are some good maps showing what kind of vegetation you'd
find at a particular period.
To put this squarely on topic to this list, for the period of 5500 BCE,
the Balkans are shown as hardwood forest, while the areas west and
north of the Black sea are steppe.
