According to Diamond, the word for meat is from a Hungarian
compound word meaning "horse meat". I'm guessing the word was picked up c.
500-1000 CE when the Magyars were on their way to present day Hungary. On
the other hand, I imagine it's possible the compound was coined after <hus>
was borrowed from Hungarian. Diamond didn't give the particulars. I'm sure
a specialist on the list will know the details.
