Dear Bjoern,
The backslash is a special case. It is used in CLAN (as in many
computer programs) to represent the "I really mean it" character. It
says that the following character really is what it says and is not some
wild card or special character. So, to get a backslash, you have to have
two backslashes. The first one says the second one really is a backslash.
Aren't computers dumb?
