first child versus later children

Does anybody know of research indicating that first children are generally
faster or slower acquirers of language than later children? This is
folk-wisdom in Holland. A friend asked my `expert` opinion on this and I
had to admit I was not aware of any research into this matter. I will
summarize your reactions to the list.
