saving data from old audio casette tapes

I would very much appreciate any advice on whether I can save the recordings 
on casette tapes that I have had for a long time now.  I recently discovered 
that they have been damaged, more specifically that the sound  unfolds in slow 
motion.  I was thinking of digitalizing them and trying to see whether I can 
speed up the sound to get it back to normal. Might anything like that work at 
all?
