-Apologies for cross-postings-

You are warmly invited to the next meeting of the UK Down Syndrome
Research Forum to be held at The Sarah Duffen Centre, Portsmouth on
the 16th and 17th October, 2008, with the support of Down Syndrome
Education International.

The Forum aims to provide an opportunity to share work in progress and
seek support and advice from others working or interested in the area
of Down syndrome research. It is usually well attended by researchers
in the field and is especially helpful for postgraduate students.

In order to energise the field with new ideas, we thought it would be
useful if at this year’s meeting people might also present research
which touches on issues affecting people with Down syndrome, but which
might not have directly involved participants with Down syndrome. For
example, intervention strategies which have worked with other
populations but which may also work with children/adults with Down
syndrome, or how to approach cultural differences in attitudes to
disability when involving parents in intervention. Researchers and
practitioners may therefore also present literature reviews or ongoing
research with other populations. Similarly, presenters may suggest
new topics for research which have previously not been addressed in
the literature on Down syndrome but which would make a significant
contribution to the field.

The format, for those new to the Forum, is informal presentations of
work in progress by those attending. The group are very helpful to one
another and useful advice on how to take a project forward and new
collaborations have been outcomes from earlier meetings.

The Forum meeting will start at 10.30 on 16th October and finish at
3pm on 17th October (these times can be adjusted to suit participants)

DownsEd will provide buffet lunches on both days and there is no fee
for attending. Bed and breakfast accommodation at reasonable prices is
available close to the venue. At present DownsEd is not able to
subsidise travel or accommodation costs for all delegates, though we
can offer a limited number of bursaries of up to £150 towards travel
and accommodation to postgraduate students who have no other funds
available to them.

If you plan to attend, please let me (michele.pettinato at downsed.org)
know as soon as possible - deadline for submissions 30th September,
with the title and abstract (250 words) of any presentation that you
wish to make and we will then put a programme together.

Please do forward this invitation on to any colleagues and students
who you think would be interested in attending.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in October,
