7. Resumen:
The main topics covered by this dissertation are the following:
(i) A crosslinguistic study of dynamic relations, particularly path,
as lexicalized by English prepositions and verbs, and Spanish
prepositions, prepositive adverbs and verbs;
(ii) a discussion of the interaction of these dynamic predicates
with various verb classes such as manner verbs;
(iii) a discussion of the differences between these two languages in
the expression of dynamic relations and path;
(iv) a critical evaluation of the theories which have tried to
explain those differences; and
(v) my own interpretation of them.
The dissertation uses different theories as basis for the overall
discussion, but does not adhere to one specifically. These theories are
Lexical Semantics (Gruber 1976), Conceptual Semantics (Jackendoff 1983,
1990), Cognitive Semantics (Langacker 1987, Hawkins, 1984).
The dissertations is organized in two parts.
Part I, Dynamic Relations and Path, consists of three chapters:
Chapter 1 is devoted to a discussion of the notion of path
and dynamic relations in English, German and other languages
such as Hausa, Japanese, and Spanish.
Chapter 2 is an extensive study of how to express dynamic
relations in English and Spanish.
Chapter 3 summarizes the path configurations distinguished
by English and Spanish.
Part II, Theoretical Implications: Interpretations of
Crosslinguistic Differences in the Expression of Path, consists of
four chapters.
Chapter 4 is devoted to a discussion of the notions of
incorporation and conflation as well as a discussion of the
lexical structure of different verbs classes of English,
Spanish, and Japanese.
Chapter 5 is a discussion of the relevant points of Talmy's
hypothesis on macro-events, satellites and framing-events,
and its applicability to Spanish.
Chapter 6 includes a fairly detailed analysis of dynamic
relations and aspect. More specifically, path and aspect.
Chapter 7 focuses on the sets of English and Spanish path
predicates, and defends the hypothesis that the differences
observed are closely linked to the number of path predicates
each language possesses.
