SPANISH AND FRENCH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS CO-ORDINATOR

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the
University of Alberta, Canada, invites applications for a Faculty
Service Officer (FSO) II position as Spanish and French Undergraduate
Language Programs Co-ordinator, effective July 1, 2002. This is a
continuing academic staff position. The 2001-02 salary scale for FSO
II is $45,374 - $64,238.

Responsibilities will include: coordinate and administer the
Department's French and Spanish undergraduate language programs;
supervise and mentor graduate teaching assistants and sessional
instructors; lead the graduate seminar in Teaching Strategies and
Methodologies; prepare and deliver regular teaching workshops for
faculty and students; assist and collaborate with faculty members in
teaching and research in the area of second language acquisition and
pedagogy.

A PhD with specialization in Spanish, French, or Applied Linguistics
is preferred, together with a native or near-native proficiency in
Spanish and French. Candidates will have demonstrated competence and
experience in the administration of undergraduate language programs.
Applicants should offer skills and research interests in computer
assisted language learning (CALL) and will be expected to remain up to
date in this area.

Applicants should also have a strong cultural orientation to their
professional activities, have relevant interdisciplinary interests,
and be open to collaboration with other disciplines within the
Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Our Department is
closely linked to the Arts Faculty's Language Resource Centre and is
the administrative home of the unique Master's degree in Humanities
Computing. In addition, the Department includes several applied
linguists who work in French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian.
The successful candidate will be expected to interact closely with
these groups in order to support high quality undergraduate second
language instruction and research, specifically in Spanish and French
but potentially in the other nine languages taught in the department.
Knowledge of German, Italian, Portuguese,
Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, or a Scandinavian language would be an
asset.
