A warm welcome to each member of this new Lexicography discussion list. By
now you have probably read a welcome message from the listserver or visited
the list website to read about the list. Any member of the list is welcome
to post a message at any time. This list is currently not moderated. That
means that if you send a message to the list it will be posted immediately
to the entire list.
Many of us are actively involved in lexical research or dictionary
production, and/or may have taught a lexicography class. Why don't you
introduce yourself and tell what your interests and activities are in
lexicography. In what languages have you researched the lexicon? If you are
helping produce a dictionary (or have already done so), what language was it
for?
Feel free to post book announcements, either to the list or by uploading a
file (to the Files section of our website) about a dictionary or other book
on lexicography that you have authored. (I have already uploaded Links to a
couple of books on lexicography which I have recently found helpful.) If you
have taught a course on lexicography, you would be welcome to post your
course syllabus in the Files section of the website.
Finally, may you each have a Happy New Year, whether your new year begins
tomorrow or on a different day on another calendar. Let us know what people
in your mother tongue or a language you are studying say at New Year time.
This is your list. Have fun making it an enjoyable place to share
experiences and insights about lexicography.
As for myself, I have been studying the Cheyenne language since 1971. I have
helped make three Cheyenne dictionaries: a student dictionary, a topical
(semantic domain) dictionary, and currently the Cheyenne dictionary team is
working on a larger dictionary on CD with sound files, illustrations, and 15
,500 entries. I enjoy all aspects of lexical research, but am especially
fond of discovering figurative uses of words.
