Dear lexicographers
I have been a member of this list for a short time but I am really enjoying
it.
My name is Jan Ullrich and my main area of lexicographical work is in
Lakhota (and Dakhota) language. I have been involved with the language for
over 17 years, both practically and theoretically.
For several years I have been creating a Lakhota dictionary database from
all possible sources including my numerous fieldworks. My current database
(in Shoebox format) has over 34,000 entries and I keep extending it further.
My education is not primarily in lexicography or linguistic theory, although
I am currently in linguistic anthropology graduate program at Indiana
University. However my main interest remains in language teaching
methodology (which is the field of my other degree) and in language
revitalization. I am developing a series of language teaching materials
(textbooks, teacher's guides and multimedia tools) for Lakhota language
revitalization (for which I struggle to find funding).
I have also been building up a corpus of the language and currently have
about 2 million words in it. I believe that is a quite large corpus for an
American Indian language and it is probably the largest corpus for a Siouan
language.
Not a single one of the published dictionaries on D/Lakhota language so far
is reliable (because of considerable spelling errors, non-phonemic
orthographies and other problems), therefore I am hoping to publish my
Lakhota dictionary in the near future. I am also interested in creating a
multi-dialect dictionary of the language, but I need to study the issue
first. If anyone on the list knows of any useful studies on creating
multi-dialect dictionaries, please let me know.
If anyone is interested, samples of some of my projects can be seen on my
web-site:
www.inext.cz/siouan
Best regards
Jan Ullrich
