Joe Grimes, Linguistics professor emeritus from Cornell Univ. has been
researching Hawai'i Pidgin for a number of years. On another discussion
list he reports the following (posted here with Joe's permission):
"During our work we got huge amounts of detailed information about Pidgin
semantics and Local culture (transmitted via Pidgin), which I took extensive
notes on.
There haven't been any real dictionaries of Pidgin (this is true of most
creole languages), only glossaries matching up lexical items with the most
obvious translation equivalents. I'm sitting within reach of a folder 5 cm
thick of notes from that time to go into the dictionary that I'm writing.
