Asia Lexicography Conference
Payap University - Chiangmai, Thailand

May 24-26, 2004

report by Brian Migliazza

The Linguistics Department of Payap University hosted the Asia Lexicography
Conference from 24-26 May 2004 in Chiangmai, Thailand. There were over 50
participants with 26 papers presented in these three days. Participants came
from across the region (from Pakistan to Vanuatu) though most were working
on dictionaries in the mainland Southeast Asian area. Monday evening was the
welcome dinner consisting of a Khan-Toke traditional northern Thai meal
complete with dancers and cultural show. Papers that have been received are
available online at http://crcl.th.net/sealex .

The conference was very well attended with many participants coming up from
Bangkok directly after the SEALS 14 meeting. People appreciated the
smallness of this symposium, which enabled all sessions to be held in one
room with no parallel sessions. Networking with others and the practical
nature of many of the presentations provided good opportunities for
participants to benefit in their own lexicography programs.

There were two plenary speakers, Suwilai Premsrirat (Mahidol University)
Thesaurus and Dictionary Series of Khmu Dialects in Southeast Asia and
Robert Bauer (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) The ABC Colloquial
Cantonese-English Dictionary.
