[Lexicog] popular lexicography

In the Philippines we've been attempting to nail down a definition for what
a "popular dictionary" should look like.  It sounds like this might be the
same idea as "popular lexicography", although I'm not sure of that.  In
this case what we're looking for is a way of presenting dictionary
information that is readily usable by the people.  This does mean cutting
out some abstract terminology, because such terminology just isn't all that
useful when the intention is to communicate.  A model we've looked at,
because of the good job it does of presenting usable and relevant
information on English words, is the Collins-Cobuild dictionary.   This is
definitely not an "amateur" or "non-professional" dictionary.  I think it
actually takes more professional expertise to create an intuitively
satisfying popular dictionary than to create something that only a few
specialists can understand.

What is the need to label such dictionaries?  Is it to boast one's
professional linguistic sophistication?  There are "dictionary" word lists
and phrases composed by the community Ioway, Otoe-Missouria elders.  Their
contribitions to the community language literacy is noted and regarded.
Community members still find their materials of value.  Their notations
have
been incorporated in to a more standard orthography based on linguistic
knowledge.  Yet, for many of the community members, the "unsophisticated"
writting systems can be a stepping stone for them into a more dignified and
phonetically correct orthography.  Perhaps this need to label is simply a
professional academic exercise amongst peers which has little reception and
value for the members in the language community itself for whom they wish
to
assist with language documentation, lexicography, etc. to bring literacy
and
maintainence to the eommunity speakers.
