[Lexicog] thesaurus structures

I would recommend that you use the Dictionary Development Program's list of
semantic domains. DDP can be downloaded from the LexicographyList web site.
Rather than trying to classify words one-by-one, it is far more efficient to
have people list the words that belong to each domain. This method is
described in the DDP documentation files. You will collect far more than
5000 words and they will be automatically classified because they are being
collected by domain. You will very likely collect most of the 5000 words you
already have, saving you a lot of trouble. By having speakers of the
language collect the words, you will get a classification that is more
likely to be that of a native speaker than if it was done by an outsider.
Unfortunately DDP uses a standardized list of domains, but I'm currently
working on ideas to help people convert the classification system into a
truly emic system for their language. I've been aware of this shortcoming of
DDP, but have not had the time or opportunity to experiment with possible
solutions. I will be releasing version 3 of DDP in a week or two and will
post a notice on this list when it is available.

I am thinking of building a thesaurus of my language by grouping all
related words (keeping them in topics, and in semantic domains). I
already have 5000 or so dictionary entries stored in Shoebox, a
great many with a \sem marker and general topic noted.
I won't have a lot of time to discuss this, as I am leaving shortly
for the northern Cook Islands. I may have email contact there,
my address is salisburys at clear.net.nz
I will be interested in hearing from anyone with useful suggestions.
