Fritz Goerling asked:
Can someone recommend a good dictionary of nicknames in the English
language? I do not mean nick-names as shortened forms of proper names
but nicknames as descriptive terms (affectionate, humorous, derogatory,
vitriolic) which answers questions about reasons for sobriquets, where they
come from.
Fritz, go to http://www.amazon.co.uk and go to the books power search. Type "nicknames" into the Title box. This will bring up 85 titles of books covering all aspects of nicknames, sobriquets, monikers, cognomens, and pseudonyms. The prices range from £2.00 to £205.00 and they cover historical nicknames, sports nicknames, political nicknames, professional nicknames, noble nicknames, military nicknames, Australian nicknames, Alaskan nicknames, Welsh nicknames, pseudonyms, code names. Nicknames of places, cities, flags, regiments, aircraft, steam locomotives, etc. etc. There is one on hilarious origins, if that is what you are looking for.
So take your pick ...
