A visiting exchange student from Germany sends the following observations
on Patrick's comments.

I think the "nicht gestattet" and "verboten" tries to express or emphasize the
importance, as you will probably find "verboten" more often on (serious)
warning signs, for instance "Betreten der Baustelle Verboten" which means
"entering the construction site is forbidden" because it is actually very
dangerous.
