Completion of the LEXICON LATINITATIS NEDERLANDICAE MEDII AEVI

The publication of the final volume of the Woordenboek van het Middeleeuws Latijn der Noordelijke Nederlanden (Dictionary of Medieval Latin of the Northern Netherlands) marks the completion of a scholarly project that has lasted more than 40 years. The complete Lexicon was presented on 8 September in The Hague to the president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW), Professor Frits van Oostrom. The 5500-page Lexicon is an indispensable tool for all historians, linguists and philologists, whose work on the Middle Ages involves using Latin source texts from the Netherlands (in the broad sense, meaning composed by Netherlanders, but also sources written about or in the Netherlands) from the general period 800-1500 A.D. The Lexicon offers extended citations from the source texts to elucidate meanings and all quotations are linked back to a list of sources. Given that many of these sources cannot be easily consulted, the Lexicon itself serves as a source text, increasing its practical utility. The Lexicon is published by Brill Academic Publishers of Leiden and forms part of a joint enterprise of the European academies of sciences, which aims to replace the only existing medieval Latin dictionary, that of Du Cange of 1688. Already in the 1920s it had been agreed that each country would make its own dictionary of the Latin used in the medieval ages within its modern boundaries. The Netherlands had to wait until the 1960s for work to commence on its Lexicon, under the direction of editor Johannes W. Fuchs. After Fuchs' death the current editors, Olga Weijers and Marijke Gumbert-Hepp continued his work. Since 1992 the Lexicon has been based in the Huygens Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. The complete Lexicon, the first fascicle of which appeared in 1970, consists of 8 large volumes and a supplement.
