September 6: TshwaneDJe HLT announces the release of TshwaneLex 1.0
TshwaneLex is a professional lexicography software suite that is fully
customisable and Unicode-based. Numerous groups and individuals around
the world are already using TshwaneLex for a variety of languages,
including Afrikaans, Albanian, Bai, Catalan, Chinese, Ciluba, Dutch,
English, Estonian, French, German, Inezeno Chumash, Irish, Malay, Motu,
Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Portuguese, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili,
Tswana, Welsh, Zulu, and more. Companies and organisations using
TshwaneLex include Oxford University Press, Macmillan, the Pan South
African Language Board, Van Dale Lexicografie, and the Spanish Royal
National Academy of Medicine. TshwaneLex has also been well-received at
all the latest Euralex, Asialex, Afrilex and Complex conferences.
The TshwaneLex suite contains numerous tools to optimise dictionary
compilation and to assist lexicographers and editors in producing
quality dictionaries in a timely manner. Major features of TshwaneLex
include:
- A focus on user-friendliness, which allows for an easy learning curve
and lowers training time. In many cases users can be up and running
within minutes.
- An immediate "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" article preview.
- Full Unicode support and Windows IME (Input Method Editor / "soft
keyboard") integration.
- Direct export to RTF (Rich Text Format) for Microsoft Word or
OpenOffice.org. Other export formats include XML and HTML (Web).
- A high degree of flexibility and customisability, thanks to the
customisable DTD (Document Type Definition) system, based on the open,
industry-standard XML.
- Automated multi-layered numbering of senses, homonyms and other
element types.
- A "smart" cross-references system automatically tracks cross-
references, thus ensuring the integrity of cross-references, and
automatically updating cross-referenced homonym or sense numbers when
these change.
- A powerful styles system that allows multiple "editions" of a
dictionary to be generated from the same database.
- Customisable meta-language to toggle the language used to display
information such as part of speech labels and cross-reference types.
- Automated backup system to protect the data.
- A Compare/Merge tool that enables "offline" changes to be merged into
the main database, including "batch merge" functionality. The
Compare/Merge tool also allows editors to keep track of the progress of
lexicographers.
- Side-by-Side view, Linked View, and automated lemma reversal all
greatly assist with the production of bilingual dictionaries, and lower
the development time thereof.
- Multimedia support ensures that images and audio recordings can be
linked anywhere within articles.
- Fast, full-dictionary text search capability, with regular
expressions for advanced users.
- Fully customisable sorting.
- A unique Ruler tool that ensures balanced treatment on
multidimensional levels.
