One reason to order space before the letters is that
it is easy to end up with unintended spaces at the end of a line,
but hard to see them. If spaces are ordered before letters,
then even if you've got excrescent spaces, words will still sort
before words of which they are prefixes. So, if you don't want to
strip excrescent spaces, this ordering is an easy way to prevent a
class of errors.
