But, John, your Bordeaux traveller is a native speaker of French (attendre
in French takes a direct object, not a PP -- si j'avais attendu un train).
He says he was born in Pau and there are other examples of Franglais in his
piece). Anyway, both examples appear to mean "waited for a train to
arrive/depart" -- it's not an adverbial of duration like "waited for an
hour". It's an alternation of the conventional "I waited for a train".

"How long did you wait?"
-- "Oh, about two trains."
Sounds very odd -- really borderline.
