Dear John,
yes, this is convincing.  My intuition corresponded to the use in cases 
in c) in your mail and in particular what you informed about _embolden_, 
but there are many cases under b) which confirm that _em-_ by itself has 
indeed the function of deriving transitive verbs (with "cause to have X" 
semantics) from adjectives (or nouns).
The German example _verkomplizieren_ corresponds to examples in c), and 
here holds what Micheal postulated, that the speakers added the prefix 
_ver-_ which is "redundant but felt it sounded plausible".
If I had these nice dictionaries that you consulted at hand I certainly 
would have looked it up by myself and would not have insisted so much. 
So, sorry for my persistence and thanks for this discussion!
