I had similar discussions when I was helping out with the Gooniyandi
dictionary. Our solution was to include the part of speech, but not to
abbreviate it (so, noun instead of n, adjective instead of adj, etc) and
we put it at the end of the entry, rather than after the headword. That
way the information was there for the people who wanted it, but those
who weren't interested weren't distracted. It was trialled in a few
workshops and it was quite popular.
